Preliminary Specs for the SaltShip 40 Explorer , a 12m Long range power Cruiser.
The primal itch to go exploring, which is inherent in all boaties, has been escalating in recent times, fueled by modern technology which puts images and information about exotic destinations and far-off lands a mere finger tip away on our computers.Where sailing vessels of yesteryear were plodding around the world at 5 - 6 knots to bring yachtsmen’s dreams to reality, the last 20 years have seen major advances in design, engine development and economy and navigational aids resulting in greater numbers of people who are now going island cruising at faster speeds and greater safety.
To satisfy this itch, new types of vessels are evolving using the latest safety equipment and efficient and reliable diesels which are capable of traveling in the 8 to 14 knot range in greater comfort and with range and economy which brings most Pacific island destinations within easy reach. The new SaltShip 40 Explorer design is a collaboration between renowned New Zealand designer R.J.(Bob) Salthouse and his son D.J. (Don) Salthouse, a leading NZ broker, with the aim of offering a very spacious, sea-kindly and rugged pilothouse style mini- trawler.
This new concept vessel is capable of cruising 2500 n. miles on her own bottom with a single reliable John Deere or Lugger diesel, with back-up propulsion and stabilizing via either sails or power driven systems, and able to be shipped on a standard 40ft Flat Rack container saving over 50% of shipping costs.
With two double cabins and two large dinettes (saloon and cockpit el fresco) sleeping up to 10 people if required, the aim is to provide a great live-aboard package for extended cruises ranging from offshore island hopping to exploring the Med and the canals of Europe. It will be easy to ship from one location to the next utilizing a simply cradle system which drops over a flat deck container, and finding a marina will be easy too.
Main engine suggested options JOHN DEERE or LUGGER naturally aspirated diesel
Predicted speed at:
2200 rpm 12.7 kn range using 18 ltr./hr. with 10% reserve = 1700nm
1800 rpm 9.5 kn range using 10 ltr./hr. with 10% reserve = 2200 nm
1400 rpm 8 kn range using 5 ltr./hr. with 10% reserve = 3800 nm
Various sized options of steadying rigs (small rig shown) with furling sails we expect to add a knot or 3 and give further fuel savings while acting as a davit crane and reducing roll with ballast tanks to flatten the ride out in adverse conditions. Plans are underway to have a range of SaltShip designs built in Asia and marketed globally with this first design launched in 2011.
