SALTHOUSE SOVEREIGN 50 LAUNCH
SALTHOUSE SOVEREIGN 50 LAUNCH
This flagship wide-body Salthouse Sovereign 50 has just come on the market for the first time since her launching in 1996. This highly specified example has so many customised features and extras added to her and has been maintained in original condition by her fastidious owner, with only 1000 hours on the engines and 520 hours on the generator.Built in female molded GRP for low maintenance, with an enclosed hardtop on the flybridge, twin walk-through transom doors, diesel heating system, dual refrigeration with 4 units and too many features to list this is a superb example of arguably New Zealand’s most successful production launch over 15m with more than 55 built to date and they are still building them today.
The huge wrap around seating area on the flybridge is such a nice area to relax that the owners regularly dine here and have brought the table up from the cockpit for added comfort, with side opening windows and a slide-out rod storage drawer in the forward cavity under the seats plus the island helm console giving excellent visibility to the skipper in all weather. The electronics include Raytheon Radar, Seiwa GPS Chart plotter, Koden sounder and Autohelm ST7002 autopilot, with the reliability of Kobelt controls and full engine instrumentation. Twin helm seats give added comfort with auto-anchoring, a second VHF radio and compass and you are looking through glass with wipers for improved visibility.
The saloon has a second helm station mimicking the flybridge’s systems with an entertainment centre and bar running the length of the starboard side with teak cabinetry upgraded throughout the entire boat to include burr elm inlays on all door panels and bench tops as our boat show model. The lower helm includes 3 window wipers, auto-anchoring, VHF and autopilot and a sliding window for ventilation while you enjoy the comfort of the two seater fabric helm seat.Just forward of the helm on the starboard side is this dining area adjacent to the galley with luxurious rolled upholstery and a feature burr elm table top.
The saloon to port serves up a large lounging settee with movable coffee table for entertaining and relaxing with guests with the flat screen TV opposite for viewing comfort. The entertainers galley is well equipped with everything from built in fridge and freezer units, 4 burner gas stove and oven and microwave, coffee machine and even an intercom to the bridge! A gas detector is fitted plus opening port light and overhead extraction system too with plenty of light and space and storage and the practicality of a teak and holly floor.
The owners master cabin forward has an island walk around bed with ensuite to starboard and plenty of locker space and storage including drawers under the bed base. The ensuite includes a separate shower cubicle and vanity with Sealand vacuflush toilets running off fresh water or salt water during longer voyages to preserve water. The easy-care surfaces gloss white surfaces and molded shower give a light and airy feel to the boat. The second cabin to port has two single berths with great dresser and drawer storage and plenty of room for two.The layout has a great flow from one living area to the next and even the aft area of the saloon opens into the cockpit with glass panels opening up against the headliner to give a bar counter which has a fridge accessible from doors either from the cockpit or saloon.
Brokers like to use expressions like “you could eat your dinner in the engine room” but in this beauty you really could, especially as it has such easy access from the galley through lift up stairs and with carpeted bilges it’s a pleasure to work on. Even the Fisher Pander generator is designed onto a specially engineered platform on rollers so it can be moved forward for ease of servicing. The raw water intakes have been modified to include a fresh water flushing system which you plug a hose onto in the cockpit to operate leaving your engines free from salt water residue which is a great preventative measure..
For those interested in economy you will be pleased to know that when Len Gilbert of Dieselcraft Evaluations hooked their fuel flow meters up to her and measured consumption it was the most efficient Sovereign wide body they had tested using only 89.6 litres per hour total at 19.6 knots and just 17 litres an hour at 10 knots. (see attached fuel figures)
*note the engines were over-revving by 70 RPMs on testing and although top speed could have been increased by re-pitching the props the owner preferred instead to have the engines working under less load for longevity.
1050 nautical mile range at 10 knots and with 10% fuel in reserve is very handy for extended cruising.
Special thought went into keeping the overhangs to a minimum so “Mystique” would fit into the owners 16m marina berth as larger marina’s were hard to come by at the time she was built. The snubbing anchor winch on the transom makes tightening lines easier or laying a stern anchor a breeze and comes in handy for scallop dredging and hauling groper in too.
Twin transom doors and an island transom give great protection and plenty of storage as a bonus. Extra rod holder across the rear of the flybridge and game poles satisfy the more serious anglers and this versatile vessel offers something for everyone with so much thought going into the systems, storage and design. One of the less trumpeted features which everyone quietly confessed they loved on the Sovereign’s was the outside toilet and shower tucked under the stairwell.
Great for the shy to sneak out to at night, the wet kids during the day rather than tramping through the boat dripping, and the messy fishy types who you would rather stayed in the cockpit.

The wheel is a stainless steel destroyer type leather covered for comfort. A GME intercom is fitted from the bridge to the galley or lower helm and a VHF at both stations. Instrumentation includes the standard gauges supplied with the engines generally including Tachometers, oil pressure, water temp, gearbox pressure, warning lights and alarm with key stop/start. The inside finish of the hardtop is faired and lined with white vinyl.
There are removable panels from side to side across the ceiling. These are mounted on top of the ceiling and are not recessed in flush and are held in place by velcro after completion of electrical fitting and testing of electronics. These panels are silicon coved to give a professional appearance but can be easily removed for access to wiring.
